Mrs. Wiles,

When I was 8, I went with my father to get a POW bracelet. It was 1972. When the prisoners were finally released in 1973, like many other young children, I watched the names roll up the screen on the television, waiting to see the name on my bracelet. I never did. I put my bracelet in a special box of the items dearest to me. I have thought many times that I should look up the name and see if he ever returned. Today I finally did. I was sad to see that he indeed did not return, but I am glad to see that he is continuing to be honored for all that he accomplished. Your husbands name is on my bracelet. Although this bracelet is simply engraved silver, it meant so much to me when I was young. I felt a connection to him through it, and I remember crying, actually sobbing as the names appeared and his did not. Having the bracelet with your husbands name on it gave me a great sense of pride and was the first step in my experience in activism and advocacy. I realize that my story is not significantly different from many other children of that time, but I felt compelled to share it with you. Although, I never knew him, he was in my thoughts then and has been throughout the years since.

Be well...

Veterans, I experienced something this Veterans Day I thought ALL VETERANS should be aware of and ACT on it. My local Post Office did not fly the POW/MIA Flag NOR the US Flag on Nov. 10th or 11th. In accordance to LAW: Public Law 105-85, the US Post Office is required to fly the POW/MIA Flag on the following days;
(A) Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May.
(B) Memorial Day, the last Monday in May.
(C) Flag Day, June 14.
(D) Independence Day, July 4.
(E) National POW-MIA Recognition Day.
(F) Veterans Day, November 11.
(2) In addition to the days specified in paragraph (1), POW-MIA flag display days include--(B) in the case of display at United States Postal Service post offices (required by subsection (c)(8)), the last business day before a day specified in paragraph (1) that in any year is not itself a business day.
If any of these days falls on a non-business day, postal facilities are required to display the POW/MIA flag on the last business day before the designated day, as directed by Postal Bulletin #21967, dated March 12, 1998.

Let's all be vigilant - Stop by your local Federal facilities such as the U.S. Post Office a few days before designated POW-MIA flag days, and remind them to fly the flag. And if you see a that a Federal building is not flying the POW-MIA flag in plain view on specified days, give them a copy of this law, and insist that they comply.

Although I have yet to get an answer as to WHY the Post Office does not fly the US Flag or the POW/MIA Flag on the actual holiday (they say because they are closed...hell they're closed/off BECAUSE of the FLAG) I ask that we ALL contact USPS and our Congressmen/women to MAKE the Federal USPS fly the US Flag and POW/MIA Flag on the ACTUAL DAY!!!
What do they do on Memorial Day?? The US Flag and POW/MIA Flag is to be raised and lowered to Half Mast until noon and than raised to Full Mast.

Yes saliva was used by ground forces. Hell, self sticking envelopes didn't even come out till the 80's. Although alot of mail was censored by our Military for the need to keep unit locations and movements unknown. Soldiers sometime would say things to family back home not thinking it would hurt anyone. These envelopes were resealed with tape. Hope this answers some questions.
